Scout Night is back! After last year’s success, MAFB and the Stimuleringsfonds are again holding an event for ten young autodidact creatives to pitch their idea at the ‘MAFB: Scout Night’. We are looking for autodidacts in the field of art, photography, design and architecture to pitch an ambitious project. Four out of the ten creatives will receive €1000 each from the Stimuleringsfonds. With this, they can create a development plan, with which they qualify for the talent development grant of €24.000. MAFB | October – March | Museum Van Loon


We are happy to announce that the exhibition ‘Aan de Surinaamse Grachten – Van Loon & Suriname (1728 – 1863)’ that MAFB created together with Museum Van Loon is extended till the 2th of March 2020! And with a reason to be very proud of. A wide interest and the desire for more educational programs and classroom visits led to the decision to extend the exhibition. To make the expo even more accessible, it will from now on be supplemented with personal stories from previous visitors such as Jeremy Herkul, Melanie Bosveld, Floor Wesseling, Remco Dongor, Maureen Koswal, Maartje Duin and Joan Lindveld. MAFB | February 11 | Soho House Amsterdam


During Black History Month, Richard Soesanna organizes a panel talk with a few themes in collaboration with Soho House. One of the themes is ‘Follow the legacy’, related to Museum Van Loon’s current exhibition that we obviously can’t stop talking about. Ricardo Burgzorg (My First Art Collection), Jeremy Herkul (Jângäl), Angelique Hoorn (Angelique Hoorn Management), our very own Marian Duff (DUFF!) and more will be in the panel. Marlon Groenhart will be the host of the evening. With this panel, we’ll talk about the historical and present cultural heritage and what it means to follow the legacy. Topics like black art and black entrepreneurship will also be discussed.

This Friday, we are giving you hip hop, RnB, future beats and dancehall from national and international soil to move your hips on. MAFB | December 07 | Museum Van Loon


And then it’s over and done with! Saturday 7 December, we held the grand finale of fashion fest 2019 in Museum Van Loon, and what a happening it was! We are more than proud of what the contestants, team fashion fest and our friends at Museum Van Loon have created together. It was unforgettable. The winners of this years edition are Marionella Hanley (Design) who will exhibit her collection at Modefabriek, Anne Wildoer (Beauty Artistry), who will become a backstage MUAH at Amsterdam Fashion Week, and Legina Montroos (Modeling) who will model in the next campaign of Patta. Thanks again to everyone involved. We could not have done it without you all and are looking forward to 2020!

On Saturday 7 December, the grand finale of fashion fest 2019 x Museum Van Loon is taking place and we cannot wait to show what our talented participants have created over the course of the last year. Each team tells one of the stories of the exhibition ‘Aan de Surinaamse Grachten’ that is currently being showcased in the Koetshuis of Museum Van Loon. From September till November the participants of fashion fest 2019 x Museum Van Loon have followed multiple masterclasses to prepare them for the Grand Finale of fashion fest. After Hours is the perfect event to spend your Thursday eve. The concept of Amsterdam Museum aims to provide people with an interesting night consisting of music, readings and museum tours. The second edition ‘Let them talk’ is focused on obstinacy, activism and making statements. In collaboration with dancer, choreographer and activist Christian Yav, MAFB will provide a tableau vivant during this edition. Christian will translate everyday movement in connection to the curator and designers’ work during the tableau vivant. Meet the City Collective Amsterdam! A think tank of directors and founders of creative organisations, that will advise the mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema, on their shared mission to get more affordable creative spaces, more recognition for projects that aim to increase the inclusivity of Amsterdam, and decrease the gap between high and low culture. We are proud to announce that the co-founder of MAFB and founder and director of OSCAM, Marian Duff, is one of those creatives! On the 1 of may MAFB, Stimuleringsfonds and Soho House Amsterdam holding an event for ten young creatives to pitch their idea at the ‘MAFB: Pitch Night’ in Soho House Amsterdam. The fashion fest Tropenmuseum edition 2018 is a co–creation between MAFB and the Research Center for Material Culture. The annual fest celebrates cultural heritage and is a battlefield for creativity that accommodates and coaches young talents operating within fashion design, hairstyling, make-up and modelling. At the Grande Finale on 9th of December, the teams present their work in front of the jury, on the catwalk in the Tropenmuseum’s Lichthal. The host is Jeanpaul Paula.

Creative director, stylist and DJ Richard Soesanna, created ‘Home coming’ by Club MAFB in honour of his ill grandmother, who introduced him to religion. When Gospel Festival Amsterdam asked him to create a series of photo’s with the topics coming home, feeling at home, fashion and religion, his muse was quickly chosen. In a mix of her own clothes, Gucci and Balenicaga, she looks stylish, relevant and full of life as the model, beautifully captured by photographer Darnell Rozenblad. We are proud to present ‘Home coming’ at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Is your house in need of a style update? Meet Kindas, the 3D designer who designs beautiful lamps. A 3D designer sounds futuristic, but it isn’t really: “I make them from natural materials because I’m inspired by nature and because I think we should look after our environment.” The lamps aren’t 100% natural yet (wires and stuff), but Kindas keeps searching for ways to make them completely natural. Kindas did 3D back in Burkina Faso. “Through a friend I got into it, and I love to create and innovate ever since!”

We gladly invite you to visit the exhibition ‘Mindful textiles – AMFI’ from 2nd until 4th of July at OSCAM to create more awareness about the pollution problem of the textile industry. 35 AMFI students developed collections of mindful textiles using a range of experimental methods, implemented into individual products. The textiles are devided into two major categories; print and knit. This exhibition is a co-creation between the AMFI students and the students and staff of HvA. Come and join us!

The fashion fest Tropenmuseum edition 2018 is a co–creation between MAFB and the Research Center for Material Culture, and the Tropenmuseum. The annual fest celebrates cultural heritage and is a battlefield for creativity that accommodates and coaches young talents operating within fashion design, hairstyling, make-up and modelling. We kick off our first masterclass with 16 designers from MBO College Hilversum and speakers Malou Sumah (Modemuze), Eline Groendijk (Daily Paper) and Willa Stoutenbeek (W.Green).

For our first solo exhibition we present ‘Faces from the Glossies’ by the legendary photographer Marc de Groot and Merle Deterink from Mag Photo. We have followed 9 fashion fest designers during their preparations for their final show in the Lichthal of the Tropenmuseum and created a documentary with all the footage. We also followed former fashion fest designers Anbasja Blanken and Lisa Konno during their trip to Suriname Fashion Week and Guyane Fashion Week. We can’t wait to see the final results.
